My Passport For Mac Instructions
I've had my passport for mac (1TB) for a few years, and it's always been fine. Yesterday I tried to eject it and a message came up saying another program (presumably VLC) was still using it, but I told it to eject anyway. Now it's won't appear anywhere. The light flashes and the disc whirrs, but it won't appear on the desktop, under finder, in disc utility and even WD's own software can't find it. I've also tried it on another mac, my tv and ps4 and no dice. Before this happened the disk was very full (about 50GB left) and had been struggling to transfer files for a few days.

I'm kinda hoping that it just isn't drawing enough power from my mac air anymore, and a replacement cable should fix the issue. Does anyone have any other thoughts what it could be? Or if I can retrieve my files? Welcome to the community, boostman! Unfortunately, you shouldn't have ejected the external WD My Passport while it was still reading data! This could potentially have done some damage on the drive.
Indeed, you should definitely try using a different USB cable with the HDD and see if you could at least get it recognized in Disk Utility. 
However, if the noises coming from the drive are persistent, I'd strongly recommend you to refer to for your files. You might be dealing with physical hardware damage, thus any data recovery attempts by yourself are rather risky for your files and could cause data loss. Keep me posted with the troubleshooting, though.
